Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 3rd ed.,
      1886. Monroe County.

CAPT. GEORGE W. STEPHENS was born December 15, 1834, in Overton (now Clay) County, Tenn., where he grew to manhood, and, in 1882, removed to
Monroe County, Ky., locating on the State line opposite Pilot Knob, on the Cumberland River, where he now resides. In 1862 he recruited a company and entered into the Fourth Confederate Tennessee Battalion of Cavalry, was captured near Atlanta, and remained in prison on Johnson's Island until the close of the war.
His father, Benjamin W. Stephens, Jr., a native of Virginia, was born April 22, 1807; removed in 1809 with his parents to Russell County, Ky., and in 1831, he located in Clay County, Tenn., where he now resides.
He is the son of Benjamin W. Stephens, Sr., who died in Russell County. Benjamin W., Jr., married Elizabeth F., daughter of Joshua and Nancy (Murray) Watson, of Clay County (born in 1808), and from their union sprang Lorenzo D., Nancy E. (deceased), Joshua J., James K. P. (deceased), Benjamin C., Eliza F. (Buford), Albert L. and Missouri A. (Williams), twins.
George W. received a good education in youth. He married, March 25, 1869, Julia C., daughter of Hamilton and Freelove (Martin), Savage [sic], of Monroe County (born September 17, 1851), and to them have been born Virgil C., Martin L., Georgia F. and Julia H. At the close of the late war Capt. Stephens had been despoiled of all his earthly possessions, but by industry and strict attention to business he has accumulated a handsome estate, and owns one of the finest farm residences in Monroe County. At the close of the war he taught school two years, after which he engaged in merchandising, first at Martinsburg and afterward at Celina, and met with encouraging success. He is now engaged in farming, stock raising and general trading, owning 1,275 acres of valuable and productive land, lying in the Cumberland Valley, in a fine state of cultivation. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity, also of the Christian Church, and in politics a Democrat.
