"Pastor Cox of Lakeland Baptist Has Been Preaching 58 Years," Harrison(Ark.) Daily Times, 5 August, 1983, pg 7
Elmer F. Cox of Omaha, pastor of the Lakeland Baptist Church, hasbeen a preacher for more than half of his 86 years. February 26, 1984will mark his 58th year.
He was born in Boone County April 13, 1897, near Harrison. Hisparents were Dr. Timothy G. and Lucinda Kindall Cox. They had sevenchildren, five girls and two boys.
"Omaha has been my home since 1903, when I was six years old," hecontinued.
Cox said that his father was one of three doctors in Omaha. Dr.R.W. Smart and Dr. W.M. Brand also practiced in that area.
"My father delivered over 500 babies while he was practicing, andnot one of them was in the hospital," he recalled.
Cox was converted at age 16, and baptized into the church at Omaha.
He served two years in the U.S. Navy, and in 1922, married GertieGrace Beck of Denver, Colo. They have three children, Carolyn Littletonof Lees Summit, Mo., Mike and Doris.
Cox and his wife were always active in the church, teaching SundaySchool and working in Bible schools, and Cox often lead singing inrevivals.
In 1926, Cox made a commitment to preach, and was ordained by thechurch in Omaha.
At one time he was preaching in seven different places a week andoperating a barber shop at the same time, to pay expenses.
He later pastored churches at Hopewell, Union, Alpena, Bellefonte,Yellville, Cotter, and Omaha. He served as a missionary for CrookedCreek Association and the Boone-Carroll Association.
He worked seven years for the Arkansas Baptist Convention. He saidthat the state was divided into five districts, and he had 14 counties inhis district, from Carroll County to Independence County.
While he was a state missionary, he held a revival at the ScottSchoolhouse east of Omaha. "That resulted in the organization of the NewHope Baptist Church," he said.
He led the people in building a church house, and resigned his StateMission work to become the pastor at New Hope.
"I stayed at that particular church 34 years, until we came to thisone." He has been the pastor at Lakeland Baptist Church for four years.
The book of minutes of the 20th annual session of the Boone-NewtonAssociation of Southern Baptists, held with Lead Hill Baptist Church Oct.15, 1970, were dedicated to Cox for his many years of service.
"Almost every place I've gone, somebody has been having their lastchance to get right with God," he said. "Sometimes they responded, sometimes they didn't."
When he started out most baptizing was done in creeks.
"Sometimes we had to damn up the creek to get a hole deep enough."He said the coldest water was at Haggard Ford, on Bear Creek. "Ibaptized 33 one day, and the ice was freezing along the edges. I couldhardly get out of the water."
He said the revival at Lakeland will continue through this Sundayevening's services. Joe Hogan is leading the singing.
